Court Convicts Okupe of Money Laundering

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of a Federal High Court, Abuja has convicted the Director General of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign, Doyin Okupe of breaching the Money Laundering Act.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had in 2019 arraigned Okupe on a 59-count charge bordering on money laundering and diversion of funds to the of N702 million.

In her ruling on Monday, the trial judge, Justice Ojukwu found Okupe guilty of contravening sections 16 (1) &(2) of the Money Laundering Act by accepting cash payments above the threshold allowed without going through a financial institution.

The matter was subsequently stood down until 1:45 pm to allow Okupe to call witnesses to testify about his character, as enshrined under Section 310 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).

The sentencing is expected to be delivered after the process is concluded.
