Nigeria has confirmed one case of Ebola disease in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), prompting public health authorities to begin contact tracing and place healthcare facilities nationwide on high alert.

The Federal Government confirmed the case on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, involving a woman who recently arrived in Nigeria on an international flight from Uganda.

According to a statement signed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, the patient is receiving medical care in isolation at a private hospital in the FCT.

Authorities have identified 44 close contacts so far, including health workers, patients, caregivers and travel contacts. Public health teams are working to identify and monitor others who may have been exposed to the virus.

The government has urged public and private healthcare facilities to remain vigilant, promptly identify and isolate suspected cases, enforce strict infection prevention and control measures, and immediately report suspected infections to public health authorities.

“The FG calls on all public and private healthcare facilities nationwide to be on high alert,” the statement said.

The government also emphasised the need for healthcare workers to maintain a high index of suspicion to support early detection and prevent further transmission.

The confirmed case comes amid heightened regional concern over Ebola infections, with neighbouring and other African countries monitoring developments and strengthening their public health responses.
