Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun says construction of the over $7 billion Gateway Deep Sea Port and Ogun State Blue Marine Special Economic Zone will begin in November.
Abiodun made this known while addressing All Progressives Congress stakeholders in Ijebu East and Ijebu North Local Government Areas, days after the Ogun State Government signed an agreement with DP World MEA FZE in Paris, France, in the presence of President Bola Tinubu.
The governor said a groundbreaking ceremony would be held in November, after which construction would begin immediately. He expects the port to be substantially completed within two and a half years.
Abiodun said the project, which is being developed in partnership with DP World, one of the world's major port operators, would help unlock Ogun State's maritime and economic potential.
He said the port project had remained largely unrealised for more than three decades despite its potential.
The governor said the project would position Ogun as a major maritime destination in Africa, with the state eventually becoming a marine hub for West Africa.
He also said the port would attract major ships and create new opportunities for investment and economic development.
Abiodun thanked President Tinubu for supporting the project and for witnessing the signing of the agreement with DP World, saying the Federal Government's backing would help drive the development.
He also identified the rehabilitation of the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode-Ore Road and the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as projects that would improve connectivity to Ogun East and support the development of the port.
The governor further highlighted the mineral and energy resources in the area, including extensive bitumen deposits stretching from Ijebu East towards Ondo State, as well as crude oil resources in parts of Ogun.
Abiodun said his administration would continue to explore these resources and other investment opportunities to support economic development across the state.
