Pleroma International School, Port Harcourt, has defeated Straitgate High School, Lagos, in a keenly contested Group C encounter at the I Beg to Differ Season 9 National Debating Championship in Lagos.
The two schools faced off on the motion, “The Nigerian Education System Suppresses Creativity,” with Pleroma International School arguing for the motion and Straitgate High School opposing it.
Pleroma argued that the country’s education system places too much emphasis on rote learning, examinations and rigid curricula, leaving students with limited opportunities to develop independent thinking and creative skills.
The team also pointed to inadequate facilities and resources for arts, technology and other areas of creative development.
Straitgate High School, however, argued that the education system provides students with the foundational knowledge and discipline needed to become creative.
The Lagos-based school also cited ongoing curriculum reforms, vocational education and the growing adoption of STEAM learning as signs that the system is adapting to the needs of modern learners.
After the exchange of arguments, rebuttals and responses from both sides, Pleroma International School emerged victorious with 78.3 points, while Straitgate High School scored 71 points.
The match was one of the Group C fixtures on Day Two of the national finals, with the participating schools battling for places in the knockout stage.
