Former Denmark international goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39 due to a shoulder injury.

The Celtic F.C. goalkeeper revealed that medical experts advised him against returning to top-level football after undergoing shoulder surgery in March. His contract with the Scottish champions expires in June.

Schmeichel enjoyed a successful career spanning nearly two decades. He was part of the historic Leicester City F.C. side that won the English Premier League title in 2016 and later captained the club to FA Cup and Community Shield triumphs in 2021.

The son of former Peter Schmeichel also earned 120 caps for Denmark national football team, representing the country at two FIFA World Cups and two UEFA European Championships.

During his career, Schmeichel also played for Manchester City F.C., Leeds United F.C., OGC Nice and R.S.C. Anderlecht before joining Celtic, where he won two Scottish Premiership titles and the Scottish Cup.
