Funsho Doherty, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2027 Lagos governorship hopeful, says he plans to build 150,000 housing units in four years, with government support to make homes more affordable for residents.

Speaking on the Daily Digest with Jimi Disu and Sheriff Quadry, Doherty identified Ikorodu, Ibeju-Lekki, Badagry and Epe as priority housing development zones because land is more available in those areas.

He said the government would provide land and initial funding, while creating arrangements to attract private investors to support the project.

Doherty estimated that building the first 30,000 units could cost between ₦500 billion and ₦600 billion, although he said the figures were still being worked out.

The governorship hopeful said the project would include different types of homes, such as studio apartments and one-bedroom units, rather than only large houses.

He said some units could be rented, while others would be offered through rent-to-own arrangements that could allow tenants to become homeowners over time.

Doherty also said the government should play a bigger role in providing affordable housing instead of leaving much of the work to private developers.

Doherty Outlines Plans to Improve Transportation

On transportation, Doherty promised to invest in modern buses and improve the connection between Lagos’ Blue and Red rail lines.

He said commuters should be able to use different public transport services with one fare, reducing the need to pay separately when changing between buses and trains.

He also said motorcycle taxis, known as okadas, could be banned in some areas, while their use could gradually decline as better transport options become available.

Doherty then described the activities of transport touts, often called agberos, as a problem with social, economic and political causes.

He said improving public transport and expanding technical and vocational training could help people move into other jobs.

He also proposed a LAMATA Academy to train and employ workers needed to maintain the city’s transport system.

Doherty said his wider plan was to create opportunities for residents to improve their lives while making Lagos work more efficiently.
