Health Workers Threaten Fresh Nationwide Strike Over Unpaid Entitlements

The Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals has directed its members nationwide to prepare for a possible strike over the Federal Government’s failure to implement agreed salary adjustments and pay outstanding allowances.

The directive followed the expiration of a two-week ultimatum issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress, with the support of the Trade Union Congress, on Oct. 23.

In a communiqué issued after its National Executive Council meeting in Enugu, the union expressed dissatisfaction with delays in implementing the adjustment to the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS).

“The NEC urges the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, honour its obligations to JOHESU in line with the Terms of Settlement signed on 5th February, 2026, and take concrete steps to prevent resumption of the suspended nationwide strike action,” the communiqué stated.

The union said the salary adjustment remained outstanding despite an 84-day strike by the Joint Health Sector Unions, which was suspended in February.

NUAHP also demanded payment of 19 months’ arrears arising from revised professional allowances for health workers, following a government circular issued on Nov. 19, 2025.

It further complained that some professionals, including health information management practitioners, medical social workers, speech therapists and audiologists, were excluded from call-duty allowances despite performing essential services outside regular working hours.

The union called on the government to ensure eligible health workers receive their entitlements and are promoted in line with established guidelines.

CONHESS is the public-sector salary structure for health workers other than medical doctors and dental surgeons.

The latest warning raises concerns about renewed disruption to healthcare services if negotiations fail.

JOHESU suspended its previous strike after reaching a settlement with the Federal Government, but the union says key commitments remain unfulfilled.
