A Nigerian human resources professional, Olukunle Hunge, has said the work of HR goes far beyond hiring workers and dismissing staff, stressing that HR professionals help businesses grow by balancing company goals with workers’ needs.
Speaking during an interview with our correspondent to commemorate International Human Resources Week, Hunge said many people wrongly see HR officials as “witch hunters” in companies.
“HR is really not that,” he said. “HR is the heartbeat of the company.”
According to him, HR professionals act as a bridge between management and workers by helping companies meet their business goals while also ensuring staff members enjoy a healthy work environment and welfare benefits.
Hunge explained that HR officers also help businesses create proper structures, especially when companies want to expand operations.
He said HR professionals can help business owners decide the kind of workers needed in new locations and how to manage manpower during busy periods.
“The HR role is very, very important to any company that wishes to grow,” he said.
Speaking on small businesses in Nigeria, Hunge said companies with only a few workers may not need a full HR manager immediately.
However, he advised business owners to focus on proper documentation, recruitment and regular communication with workers.
He also encouraged small business owners to take online training courses to understand basic HR practices.
Hunge urged young Nigerians interested in HR to join professional communities and get certified early.
“HR is a very fun and lovable profession,” he said.
“However, you need to first love the profession because it is a thankless profession.”
He added that HR professionals must remain committed to their work despite challenges in the industry.
