University unions in Lagos State have blamed their ongoing indefinite strike on the non-implementation of a 2025 agreement reached between university unions and the Federal Government.

Dr. Ibrahim Abiola Alabi, secretary of the Academic Staff Union of Universities at Lagos State University of Education and a member of the Joint Action Committee, said the agreement had not been implemented by Lagos state-owned universities.

Speaking on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, he said the unions had written several letters and held meetings with government representatives before deciding to strike.

“The strike has become necessary as a result of non-implementation of the 2025 House-to-Federal Government Agreement,” Alabi said.

He said the agreement was signed in December and directed universities, including state institutions, to implement its provisions.

According to Alabi, the strike had entered its fourth week, with the implementation expected to have started nine months earlier.

He said the Lagos government had not given the unions a formal response since the strike began on 15th September.

“We have not received any formal information,” he said, adding that a meeting scheduled with the government was also not held.

Alabi said the dispute included the Lagos Factor, an allowance linked to the higher cost of living in Lagos.

He said the allowance was not new and had previously been included in salary components, but the unions now wanted the structure to be made clearer under the new salary template.

Alabi said the government had made an offer, but “the offer is below the union demand.”

He said the unions were ready to end the strike if their demands were implemented.

“We are ready to call it off today,” Alabi said.

“We are tired of the strike.”
