President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerian journalists to avoid reporting what could amplify terrorists and criminal groups, saying irresponsible coverage could undermine national security and democracy.
Speaking at the inaugural Presidential Press Corps Dinner in Abuja, the President said the media should put national interest first and choose facts over sensationalism. He added that press freedom comes with responsibility and warned against misinformation and clickbait.
Tinubu also defended his administration's economic reforms, saying the economy is stabilising, foreign reserves have risen above 50 billion dollars, and investor confidence is improving. On security, he said military operations had intensified, leading to the neutralisation of thousands of criminal elements and the rescue of hostages.
The Information Minister, Mohammed Idris, also called on journalists to report security issues responsibly and avoid headlines that promote terrorist groups.
