Several top-ranked players have been eliminated from the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, as the tournament moves into the second week with the Round of 16 stage now taking shape.

In the women’s singles, defending champion Iga Swiatek, ranked world No. 3, was knocked out in the third round following a shock defeat to Alexandra Eala.

World No. 2 Elena Rybakina also exited at the same stage after losing to Elise Mertens, in one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far.

American Amanda Anisimova, ranked inside the top 10, was also eliminated early, further opening up the women’s draw as several leading contenders bowed out before the second week.

Elsewhere, rising star Mirra Andreeva, also ranked in the top 10, had earlier exited in the second round, adding to the growing list of high-profile casualties.

In the men’s singles, world No. 12 Casper Ruud and world No. 13 Andrey Rublev were both knocked out in the opening rounds, while Daniil Medvedev also exited before the second week, continuing a trend of early departures among seeded players.

With third-round matches concluded and fourth-round fixtures underway, attention has now shifted to the Round of 16, where the remaining contenders are battling for places in the quarter-finals.

The series of upsets has left the tournament wide open, particularly in the women’s category, with emerging players taking advantage of the unexpected exits of top seeds.

Focus now turns to the decisive stages at the All England Club as the race for this year’s titles intensifies.
