The Anambra State government has launched a recruitment drive for community health workers aimed at strengthening primary healthcare delivery across the state.

The exercise, which began on Tuesday in Awka, is being conducted by the Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHCDA) in collaboration with the state Ministry of Health and the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency.

ASPHCDA Executive Secretary Chisom Uchem said the initiative is designed to improve access to affordable healthcare, particularly in rural communities.

“This is part of government efforts to boost primary healthcare by recruiting and deploying qualified personnel directly to the communities,” Uchem said. “The measure will bridge the gap between residents and health facilities, ensuring that essential services reach grassroots populations.”

Uchem cautioned applicants against malpractice, warning that those who present forged certificates would face prosecution. She also urged successful candidates to serve with compassion and integrity, stressing that negligence in their duties could cost lives.

Dr. Obiagelu Uchebo, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Health, said the workers will provide basic care, guide residents to health centres, and support expectant mothers during pregnancy and childbirth.

She added that at least 10 health workers would be deployed to each ward across the state to address staffing shortages in primary health facilities and help reduce maternal deaths, stillbirths, and other preventable fatalities.
