British-Nigerian heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has spoken publicly for the first time since a tragic car crash in Nigeria last December that claimed the lives of two of his closest friends and team members.

In an emotional video posted this week, Joshua reflected on the loss of Latif “Latz” Ayodele and strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami, describing the pair as his “brothers” and longtime companions.

The accident occurred on December 29 when the SUV carrying Joshua and his friends collided with a stationary truck along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Joshua sustained minor injuries and was later discharged from hospital, but Ayodele and Ghami died at the scene.

In his statement, Joshua spoke about the profound impact his friends had on his life, calling them more than teammates, “my left and my right.”

He said he now understands his duty to honour their memory by supporting their families and continuing the work they had planned together, emphasising his commitment to doing “what is right” for them and their loved ones.

The boxer also addressed his emotional journey since the crash, saying he feels comforted, not afraid, when reflecting on life and mortality.

He thanked fans worldwide for their support and acknowledged the outpouring of love since the tragedy.

While Joshua did not outline specific plans for his boxing career, promoter Eddie Hearn has said the 36-year-old will be given time to heal both physically and emotionally.

The future of his much-anticipated bout with Tyson Fury remains uncertain as he focuses on grieving and honouring his friends.
