Opposition leaders including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Seyi Makinde are expected to meet in Abuja on August 18 as part of efforts to build a united platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting is being facilitated by the G100, a coalition of concerned Nigerians, which said it had concluded a first round of consultations with leaders of six opposition parties.
The group said it engaged the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress, Nigeria Democratic Congress, Allied Peoples Movement, Peoples Redemption Party and Social Democratic Party.
According to the G100, the consultations were frank, constructive and encouraging, with opposition leaders acknowledging the need for greater cooperation, compromise and sacrifice to present a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The group said the consultations followed its August 2 Open Letter on what it described as the Doctrine of Necessary Democratic Opposition.
It said the August 18 summit would provide a platform for the parties to begin discussions on how to achieve greater unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
The G100 stressed that it would not dictate the outcome of the discussions but would facilitate dialogue and help build confidence among the opposition parties.
It maintained that a credible opposition is essential to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, warning that continued fragmentation among opposition parties could undermine their ability to effectively compete for the electorate’s mandate.
