Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the government is taking urgent steps to shield households and businesses from rising fuel prices triggered by the ongoing Middle East conflict.

In a televised address, Albanese said the war has caused an unprecedented surge in petrol and diesel costs, warning that the economic impact will continue for months.

“I understand that right now it’s hard to be positive… the war in the Middle East has caused the biggest spike in petrol and diesel prices in history.”

He said Australia is not involved in the conflict but is still feeling the economic ripple effects, which are being reflected at fuel stations and supermarkets nationwide.

“Australia is not an active participant in this war, but all Australians are paying higher prices because of it.”

The Prime Minister acknowledged pressure on households, farmers, truck drivers and small businesses, saying the government has adopted a National Fuel Security Plan in response.

He said the plan was agreed at National Cabinet level to ensure coordination across political lines in case global fuel disruptions worsen.

Albanese also announced temporary cost-of-living relief measures, including a reduction in fuel excise and a cut to heavy vehicle road user charges.

“Today we cut the fuel excise in half, cutting the tax on every litre of petrol by 26 cents.”

He said the measures will remain in place for three months as part of efforts to stabilise prices and strengthen fuel supply chains.

The Prime Minister urged Australians to use fuel responsibly, encouraging the public to avoid unnecessary consumption and consider public transport where possible.

“Think of others in your community… if you can switch to catching the train or bus… do so.”

He added that while the months ahead may be challenging, the government will continue working to protect Australians from the worst of global economic pressures.
