The Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong is optimistic that the planned indefinite strike by organized labor would be averted.

He voiced the optimism on Wednesday after a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Lalong told State House correspondents that the government is committed to the welfare and prosperity of the Nigerian worker.

He added that discussions with organised labour have been fruitful.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, was also confident that labour would not resort to any industrial action that will compound the nation's socio-economic challenges.

The SGF urged labour leaders to work with the federal government and be patient with the president in his resolve to better Nigeria's economy.

The SGF used the forum to explain that the nation's 63rd independence anniversary celebration will be less ceremonial than previous ones owing to the economic situation of the country.

Labour unions in Nigeria have been in discussions with the federal government over a proposed strike.

The action is to push for improved welfare for public workers, in the face of the inflation propelled by the removal of petrol subsidies.

On 1 September, the Nigeria Labour Congress gave the government a 21-day ultimatum to meet its demands, failing which the nationwide strike would start.

The ultimatum expires on Friday.
