Siminalayi Fubara has withdrawn from the upcoming Rivers State governorship race, stating that his decision was driven by the need to prioritise peace, unity, and stability in the state.

Fubara announced this in a statement personally signed on Wednesday night, where he confirmed stepping down from the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primaries scheduled to hold on Thursday.

The Rivers State governor said the decision followed extensive consultations with family, friends, and political associates, describing it as “difficult but necessary.”

“Leadership requires sacrifice at critical moments. There comes a time when personal ambition must give way to the greater good of the people, because Rivers State is bigger than any individual,” he said.

Fubara added that his withdrawal was not borne out of fear or weakness, but out of conviction to ensure the state moves forward peacefully.

He emphasised that his decision was a deliberate step taken in the interest of unity, noting that he chose to step aside so the state can move forward in peace while he continues to serve out his mandate.

He also pledged to support whoever emerges as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the forthcoming election.

The governor acknowledged the support of party members and stakeholders, expressing gratitude to his supporters for their commitment throughout the process, while urging them to remain steadfast.

Fubara further hinted at underlying pressures during the process, suggesting that some realities are best handled with restraint for the sake of stability.

He also extended appreciation to Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and encouragement.

Despite stepping away from the race, Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Rivers State until the end of his current tenure as governor.

The development marks a significant shift in the political landscape ahead of the Rivers State governorship election, with attention now turning to the emergence of the APC’s candidate.
