Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has called for stronger education, family values and enforcement of laws to address what he described as the erosion of values in Nigerian society.
Hamzat made the remarks during a radio interview while reflecting on his early exposure to politics and public service, as well as the challenges facing Lagos.
He said his interest in public affairs was shaped by his father, whom he described as a banker and politician who was active in Lagos politics. Hamzat recalled that political meetings were regularly held at his family home, where he and his siblings were sometimes asked to take minutes.
He also recalled meeting the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo as a secondary school student during a campaign visit. Hamzat said the encounter influenced his understanding of public service.
According to him, Awolowo told him that people of integrity must participate in politics if Nigeria is to avoid decline.
Hamzat said the country’s values have since weakened and called for a collective effort involving government, families, schools and religious institutions to reverse the trend.
“Education is key,” Hamzat said, stressing the need to ensure that children receive proper education while families and religious institutions reinforce discipline and good values.
He also argued that laws must be enforced fairly, saying no individual should be above or below the law.
“We must make sure that nobody is above it and nobody is beneath it,” he said.
