
Israeli President Isaac Herzog is due at the Vatican on Thursday for talks with Pope Leo, who has intensified calls for an end to the war in Gaza.
Herzog’s office confirmed on Tuesday that the one-day trip comes at the invitation of the pontiff. While in Rome, the Israeli leader will also hold talks with the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and tour the historic Vatican Archives and Library.
According to a statement from the presidency, discussions will focus on securing the release of hostages held in Gaza, tackling global antisemitism, and protecting Christian communities across the Middle East. Other political issues are also expected to feature.
Pope Leo, the first pontiff of U.S. origin, last week issued what he described as a “strong appeal” for an end to the nearly two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas.
