At least 11 people were killed and more than 50 houses burned when violent clashes erupted early Friday in the Akyawa and Udege Kasa communities in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, police said on Saturday.

The state’s police command said the attack was carried out by suspected hoodlums in a reprisal over the alleged killing of two kinsmen.

About 50 homes were razed in Akyawa and two in Udege Kasa, leaving families homeless and residents afraid to return to their houses.

Police Public Relations Officer SP Ramhan Nansel said the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, visited the area on Saturday, expressed deep sorrow over the deaths and destruction, and assured the public that the force would pursue those responsible.

“The command has launched an intensive manhunt for all perpetrators, with tactical and investigative teams directed to ensure their prompt identification, arrest, and prosecution,” Nansel said.

Security has been reinforced with support from the military and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

During a stakeholders meeting, the police urged residents to remain calm, law‑abiding and assist security agencies with credible information to support the investigation.

Authorities say normalcy has largely been restored, but many residents remain fearful.

Local sources and community members said the violence followed earlier attacks in nearby settlements and have warned that insecurity continues to disrupt farming and everyday life in the region.

Some residents said they fear further attacks unless stronger preventive measures are taken by state authorities.

No arrests have been made public, and police have not released the identities of the victims.
