The Federal Government has released funds for the payment of eight months of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, CATA, to academic staff in federal tertiary institutions.
The payment covers January to August 2026.
Minister of Education Maruf Tunji Alausa announced this on Wednesday after inaugurating the Ministerial Committee on Accreditation.
He said the release was part of the government’s efforts to implement its agreements with academic staff unions and improve the welfare of education workers.
Alausa said the payment was in line with the 2025 Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities agreement.
He said federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education had been directed to begin paying eligible academic staff.
The allowance is meant to help lecturers cover the cost of tools, materials and other resources needed for teaching, research and related academic activities.
The minister also said arrangements were underway for the corresponding allowance for non academic staff.
He said funding for the non academic staff allowance was expected to be released within the coming weeks.
The latest payment follows an earlier release covering five months of accumulated CATA payments announced by the government in June.
Alausa said the latest release reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving the welfare of academic and non academic staff in tertiary institutions.
