The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread rain and thunderstorms across the country from Monday to Wednesday, warning residents in flood-prone areas to take precautions.
In its three-day weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall over parts of Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina on Monday, with more rain expected later in the day in Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba States.
The agency warned that flash floods could occur in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano during this period, while central states like Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, and Nasarawa will experience morning cloudiness and light to moderate rainfall, with a high flood risk in parts of Plateau.
In the southern region, light to moderate rains are expected across Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
NiMet said Tuesday would bring mostly sunny skies with patchy clouds in the North, while thunderstorms and rain would persist in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, and nearby states.
The central and southern regions will continue to experience moderate rainfall.
By Wednesday, the agency forecast a mix of sunshine and thunderstorms in the North, cloudy skies and moderate rainfall in central states, and morning showers with heavier rainfall later in the day across southern states, including Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River.
NiMet advised residents to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rains, and disconnect electrical appliances during storms.
It also urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific forecasts for flight safety, and the public to stay updated through its website, www.nimet.gov.ng.
