The minority caucus in the House of Representatives has asked President Bola Tinubu to suspend all political activities tied to the 2027 elections and instead declare a six-month national security and economic recovery plan.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, minority leader Fred Agbedi accused the president of prioritising re-election politics over the safety and welfare of citizens, arguing that the country is facing an unprecedented crisis of killings, kidnappings, economic hardship, and what he called deliberate efforts to weaken opposition parties ahead of the polls.

Politics, he said, must take a back seat when the nation is bleeding, and Tinubu must either lead or leave.

Agbedi pointed to the killing of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died in captivity after being abducted alongside his wife in Katsina State, as a national shame and proof of a failed security architecture.

He argued that if a general is not safe within Nigeria's borders, ordinary citizens have reason to worry.

He also condemned the continued captivity of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State, calling for a special military operation to secure their release within 72 hours, and describing every additional hour in captivity as an hour stolen from Nigeria's future.

Separately, Agbedi criticised a ruling by Federal High Court judge Peter Lifu ordering INEC to deregister five opposition parties, describing it as judicial overreach designed to shrink the democratic space and exclude credible opposition voices from the 2027 presidential race.
