National Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi says Nigeria has the resources and potential to overcome poverty, hunger and underdevelopment with competent and accountable leadership.

Obi made the remarks in a statement posted on X after participating as a guest and panellist at the Nigerian Bar Association’s 66th Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He said Nigeria’s poverty and food insecurity were largely the result of years of mismanagement and corruption, arguing that the country had enough human and natural resources to achieve economic prosperity.

Obi said greater investment in agriculture, particularly in Northern Nigeria, could boost food production, create jobs and position the country as a major food exporter.

On fuel subsidy removal, he reiterated his 2023 position that the subsidy system was affected by corruption and should have been removed gradually after establishing its actual cost.

He said savings from subsidy removal should be transparently invested in agriculture, health care, education, poverty reduction, security and infrastructure.

Obi said Nigerians should see tangible benefits from government policies and should not face higher energy costs without corresponding improvements in their living conditions.

He said Nigeria’s prosperity would ultimately depend on competent, honest and purposeful leadership focused on the common good.
