The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (Rtd), has charged newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General and Assistant Inspectors-General of Police to adopt strategic leadership and strong corporate governance to reform the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking at a two-day induction program in Abuja, DIG Argungu delivered a lead paper titled “Policing Strategic Leadership on Promoting Public Sector Governance, Accountability and Institutional Excellence.”
He said modern policing requires innovation, technology integration, and international collaboration to boost efficiency and public trust.
“Old methods of intelligence gathering are obsolete. Police must anticipate emerging challenges and think innovatively,” DIG Argungu said.
“Technology, especially in electronic evidence and cybercrime management, is key for effective policing in the 21st century.”
He stressed that accountability, transparency, and integrity are non-negotiable.
Officers are answerable not only to the law, but also to government, the National Assembly, the PSC, and the public.
DIG Argungu highlighted recurring complaints, including arbitrary arrests, unlawful searches, and excessive use of force, urging the new leadership to address these issues.
The induction program, organized by the Police Reform Secretariat in collaboration with the UNDP, CLEEN Foundation, and the Federal Government of Germany, included modules on ethics, financial regulations, and external oversight mechanisms.
Held at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, the event brought together officials from the Ministry of Police Affairs, the National Human Rights Commission, and other stakeholders.
DIG Argungu described the forum as a critical platform for promoting public sector governance, professionalism, and ethical conduct within the Nigeria Police Force.
