The Senate has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of 13-year-old Ochanya Obaje, a native of Ogene-Amejo, in Benue State.

The decision followed the submission of a petition by the Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, on Wednesday at plenary.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan told her colleagues that Ochanya was repeatedly raped by her uncle, Andrew Ogbuja, and his son Victor, from the age of six until she died in 2018, aged 13.

According to the lawmaker, the multiple assaults led to her being infected with Vesico Vaginal Fistula VVF.

She added that all efforts to bring the perpetrators to book have proved abortive.

After her brief presentation, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, referred the matter to the Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions to investigate and report back in four weeks with recommendations.
