SERAP Sues Code of Conduct Bureau Over Alleged Bill Alterations

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has sued the Code of Conduct Bureau over its alleged failure to investigate claims of tampering with key legislation.

The suit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, is asking the court to compel the bureau to probe allegations involving the Electoral Act Amendment Bill and tax reform bills.

SERAP claims some lawmakers removed provisions on electronic transmission of election results during plenary without due process.

It also alleges that certain provisions in tax reform bills were altered, leading to differences between versions passed by the National Assembly and those later gazetted.

The group is seeking a court order directing the bureau to investigate and forward any confirmed violations to the Code of Conduct Tribunal for prosecution.

SERAP argues that such actions, if proven, amount to abuse of office, conflict of interest and a breach of transparency in lawmaking.

A member of the House of Representatives, Abdussamad Dasuki, had earlier raised concerns over discrepancies in the tax bills.

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the case.
