Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has regained his freedom after spending four days in detention at Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja.
Sowore was arrested alongside Aloy Ejimakor, special counsel to IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, Kanu’s younger brother Emmanuel, and 11 others during a peaceful #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja last week. The group had gathered to demand Kanu’s release but were dispersed and detained by police.
The 14 protesters were arraigned on Friday, October 24, before Magistrate Abubakar Sai’id of Kuje Magistrate Court, facing charges of unlawful assembly and public disturbance. The court granted each defendant bail of ₦500,000, along with conditions including verified National Identification Numbers (NIN), a three-year tax clearance certificate, and the deposit of their international passports.
After meeting all bail conditions, Sowore and the others were released on Monday, October 27. Confirming his release on X, Sowore wrote:
“HAPPENING NOW: Leaving Kuje Prison in Abuja after being detained there illegally for four days by @officialABAT illegal IGP, Kayode Egbetokun. #FreeNnamdiKanuNow.”
