The Super Eagles have safely arrived in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, ahead of their decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic on Tuesday, following a mid-air scare that delayed their travel.

The team’s flight landed at Victor Attah International Airport at exactly 8:05 a.m. on Sunday after being grounded overnight in Luanda, Angola, due to a technical emergency.

The ValueJet aircraft conveying players, coaches, and officials from Polokwane, South Africa, to Uyo was forced to return to Luanda just 25 minutes after refuelling when a loud crack was heard in the aircraft’s windshield.

The pilot made a precautionary U-turn, safely landing the plane back in Luanda, where passengers disembarked as emergency procedures were activated.

Officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed that all necessary safety protocols were followed, and a replacement aircraft was later provided to complete the journey.

The Super Eagles, currently third in Group C with 14 points, must win Tuesday’s match against Benin Republic in Uyo to seal their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

They trail Benin Republic, which has 17 points, and South Africa with 15.

The team is expected to hold a light training session later on Sunday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium ahead of the crucial encounter.
