President Bola Tinubu has met with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other organised labour unions to discuss the proposed nationwide protest scheduled for today (Wednesday).

The meeting, held on Tuesday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, comes as labour prepares to take to the streets to demand urgent government action on the country’s worsening insecurity.

Labour leaders, including representatives of the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), presented their concerns to the president, urging stronger government measures to protect workers and citizens amid rising banditry, kidnappings, and violent crimes across the country.

The protest, which the NLC says is aimed at compelling decisive government intervention on insecurity, has drawn support from various workers’ groups, civil society organisations, and ordinary Nigerians concerned about the deteriorating security situation.

According to participants in the meeting, Tinubu listened to labour’s demands and engaged with union leaders on possible next steps, though details of specific commitments made by the presidency have not yet been disclosed.

The December 17 protest is expected to take place nationwide, with rallies planned in major cities including Abuja, Lagos, and other state capitals.

Labour officials have emphasised that the action will be peaceful, calling on authorities and participants alike to ensure public safety.

Security concerns remain high as Nigerians grapple with increasing incidents of armed attacks, kidnappings, and other violent crimes that have affected workers, families, and businesses across the country.
