Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has flagged off the reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the state after about 10 years.

The governor launched the initiative on Saturday along the Mushin–Agege Motor Road, stressing the need for residents to take responsibility for keeping their environment clean.

Sanwo-Olu said maintaining a clean and healthy city cannot be achieved by government alone, noting that residents must contribute by keeping their homes, neighbourhoods, markets and public spaces tidy. He explained that the exercise is aimed at restoring environmental discipline and improving public health across the state.

The governor also warned that indiscriminate waste disposal and blocked drainage systems contribute to flooding, environmental degradation and health risks.

He urged Community Development Associations, market leaders, youth groups and other institutions to support the initiative and promote a culture of cleanliness.

Sanwo-Olu announced that the sanitation exercise will hold every last Saturday of the month from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., beginning in April 2026, calling on Lagos residents to participate actively.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said agencies under the ministry, including the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force, will work together to ensure effective implementation.

He also reminded residents that the Lagos State Environmental Law remains in force and warned against illegal waste disposal, burning of refuse and other environmental offence.
