President Bola Tinubu has vowed to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and push for state police as part of efforts to address rising insecurity across the country.

Speaking in Abuja after accepting the APC presidential nomination for the 2027 election,  Tinubu said his administration remained committed to restoring peace and stability across all parts of the country.

“I assure you that I take seriously the responsibility to safeguard the lives and property of every Nigerian,” the president said while accepting the ruling party’s ticket at the presidential nomination event held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre.

He disclosed that the federal government had intensified investments in intelligence gathering, surveillance systems, and modern security equipment to support the armed forces and the police in tackling terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.

Tinubu also renewed calls for constitutional amendments to allow the establishment of state police, describing it as a matter of “national emergency.”

“We also expect the National Assembly to amend the Constitution to allow the creation of state police as a matter of national emergency,” he said.

The president maintained that despite persistent security and economic challenges, his administration had recorded significant progress since assuming office in 2023.

According to him, reforms introduced by his government were beginning to stabilise the economy and reposition critical sectors for long-term growth.

Tinubu cited the removal of fuel subsidy, exchange rate reforms, increased revenue generation, and investments in infrastructure as part of measures aimed at rebuilding the economy.

He also highlighted achievements in the education and power sectors, including the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, which he said had disbursed over N282 billion to more than 1.5 million beneficiaries.

On electricity, the president said his administration had supplied 2.5 million electricity meters under the Presidential Metering Initiative while introducing a N4 trillion bond programme to settle legacy debts owed to power generation and gas companies.

He added that power generation had at some points reached 6,000 megawatts — which he described as a 50 per cent increase from inherited levels.

Tinubu acknowledged that many Nigerians were still grappling with rising living costs and the effects of economic reforms but insisted that the government was governing “with honesty and action.”

“Many Nigerians still struggle with rising costs and economic adjustment. We do not dismiss these concerns; we understand them and govern not in comfort, but in reality,” he said.

The president described his re-nomination by the All Progressives Congress (APC) as both an endorsement of his administration’s reforms and a call to continue what he termed the unfinished task of national renewal.

He urged Nigerians to support his administration’s vision for economic expansion, industrialisation, food security, infrastructure development, and democratic consolidation.
