As Nigeria celebrates its 65th Independence Anniversary, the Lagos State Government has restated its commitment to inclusive governance, social protection, and uplifting the vulnerable in society.
Speaking during the anniversary celebration in Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the occasion calls for sober reflection on the nation’s challenges, progress, and victories.
He emphasized the theme of this year’s independence, “Nigeria at 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation,” stressing that genuine collaboration between government and citizens is essential for national development.
Quoting Henry Ford, the Governor noted, “If everyone is moving forward together, then the success takes care of itself.” He said this underscores the need for mutual trust and synergy between the government and the people.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted that since the inception of his administration, the state has worked under the T.H.E.M.E.S. Agenda and later expanded into the T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus Agenda during his second term.
The upgrade, he said, was aimed at doubling the pace of development while focusing more on social inclusion, gender balance, youth empowerment, and protecting vulnerable groups.
The Governor disclosed that the Lagos State Social Register has been expanded to capture over one million households across the state’s 57 LGAs and LCDAs.
The register, according to him, has become the foundation for welfare interventions, ensuring that relief measures reach indigent families, widows, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.
He also reaffirmed Lagos’ alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s directive that vulnerable households should receive a minimum of ₦75,000 in direct support and cash transfers from the federal government.
Sanwo-Olu assured residents that his administration would continue to pursue policies and initiatives that guarantee no citizen is left behind in the state’s development journey.
