The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has expressed serious concerns over recent reports of U.S. airstrikes targeting ISWAP militants on Nigerian soil.

In a statement, ADP’s National Chairman, Engr. Yabagi Yusuf Sani, warned that direct foreign military action raises critical constitutional and sovereignty issues that demand clear legal and democratic oversight.

“No government serious about sovereignty should outsource the use of force against its own enemies without full constitutional clarity and democratic oversight,” Sani said.

“Fighting terrorism must not become an excuse for quietly surrendering national authority.”

Historically, Nigeria’s cooperation with international partners has focused on intelligence sharing, training, and logistics.

The reported shift to foreign kinetic strikes marks a significant escalation, Sani added. “Once foreign jets begin striking targets inside your country, you have crossed from cooperation into dependency.

That is a line Nigeria must never cross casually.”

The ADP cited Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, which places responsibility for security and welfare on Nigerian institutions, and noted that executive authority under Section 5 does not override constitutional accountability, legislative oversight, or transparency.

The party further cautioned that allowing foreign strikes could signal Nigeria’s inability or unwillingness to secure its territory, threatening the nation’s sovereignty.

“Terrorism threatens the state, but erosion of constitutional order destroys it,” the statement said.

ADP urged the Federal Government to clarify the legal framework, command structure, rules of engagement, civilian-protection measures, and legislative role in the cooperation.

The party stressed the importance of defeating terrorism without compromising sovereignty, accountability, or constitutional governance.

The statement was signed by Dr. Sani Dawop, National Publicity Secretary of the Action Democratic Party.
