Grief continues to pour in following Tuesday’s tragic fire at Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos Island, which claimed the lives of at least 10 workers.

United Capital Plc confirmed on Thursday that six of its staff members died in the blaze, describing them as “valued colleagues and cherished members of the United Capital family.”

The firm said it is providing support to bereaved families and will hold a memorial service in their honour.

Afriland Properties chairman, Tony Elumelu, also expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. In a condolence message, he called the fire a “devastating loss” and said no words could capture the magnitude of the grief.

“Tuesday was a stark reminder of what truly matters: our irreplaceable people,” he said, adding that he had cut short his trip to the United Nations General Assembly in New York to return to Lagos in respect of the victims.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) confirmed the deaths of four of its employees, naming them as Assistant Directors Mrs. Ekelikhostse George and Mr. David Sunday-Jatto, Senior Manager Mrs. Nkem Onyemelukwe, and Manager Mr. Peter Ifaranmaye.

The agency praised their dedication and professionalism, pledging support to their families and coworkers while reviewing safety protocols across its nationwide offices.

Afriland Towers, a commercial building that houses several corporate tenants, was gutted in an afternoon fire on Tuesday.
