A civil society group says far fewer people are voting in Anambra State now than eight years ago.

The group told reporters that voter turnout fell by 58 percent over that period, which is especially worrying for election observers and teachers who want young people to take part.

Experts and civic groups blame several things for the drop. They say many young people feel politics does not help them, so they stay away.

A youth survey conducted for the state shows that young voters are tired of broken promises and that many do not trust politicians.

Security is also a big worry. News reports and analysts say fear of violence and attacks on some communities makes voters afraid to go to polling places.

Officials say extra police and soldiers are being sent to keep people safe, but voters still worry.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged people to vote and warned that low turnout hurts democracy.

INEC’s chairman asked political leaders to help make voting safe and to stop things like vote-buying that push people away from the ballot.

Observers say the drop should worry everyone because elections work best when many people vote.

They want more voter education, better security at polling places, and steps to rebuild trust in politicians.
