Anioma State a Political, Historical Necessity — Sen. Nwoko

Senator Ned Nwoko (APC–Delta North) has renewed the call for the creation of Anioma State, describing it as a political necessity that would correct historical imbalances.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Monday, Nwoko said his bill before the Senate Committee on Constitution Review seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to carve Anioma out of Delta State and place it in the South-East.

He argued that the region’s current status as the only zone with five states amounts to “national injustice,” with fewer lawmakers, local governments, and federal allocations.

The lawmaker stressed that Anioma communities in Delta North share deep cultural and linguistic ties with the Igbo nation and are economically viable, hosting vast oil and gas resources, fertile farmland, and major power infrastructure.

He added that Anioma’s location, with Asaba as capital, would serve as a bridge between East and West.

“Anioma people deserve a state. It is not a privilege to be begged for, but a right long denied and justice long delayed,” Nwoko said.
