Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from a Lagos hospital, two days after a road accident that claimed the lives of two of his close associates.
The governments of Lagos and Ogun States confirmed his release in a joint statement, noting that while Joshua remains “heavy-hearted and full of emotions,” doctors have cleared him to continue recuperation from home.
The crash happened on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua rammed into a stationary truck parked on the shoulder of the highway. Two close friends — Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami — died on the spot.
“The governments of Lagos and Ogun States, once again, commiserate with the families of Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami,” the statement read. “We pray The Almighty grants the repose of their souls and the families the fortitude to bear this sad loss.”
After being discharged, Joshua visited a funeral home in Lagos alongside his mother to pay his final respects. Arrangements are underway to repatriate the bodies of the deceased.
Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Ogun Governor Dapo Abiodun also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his “fatherly support” and praised the medical team at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their “quality care and professionalism.”
Joshua, 36, sustained minor injuries in the crash. Authorities have begun investigating the circumstances, with early reports pointing to excessive speed and a possible tire burst.
The joint statement was signed by Lagos Commissioner for Information Gbenga Omotoso and Ogun State Special Adviser Kayode Akinmade.
