Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday.

This recent move consolidates the ruling party’s control over the North-Central geopolitical zone.

The announcement was made by APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda during the party’s 14th National Caucus meeting at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

Yilwatda, a native of Plateau State, described the governor's entry into the party as a "strategic gain" that aligns the state with the federal government’s governance trajectory.

"With the defection of Governor Mutfwang, the entire North-Central region is now governed by the APC," Yilwatda told party leaders, including President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Istifanus Nwansat, a senior political adviser to the governor, stated earlier this week that the decision was prompted by persistent "chaos and instability" within the PDP.

Nwansat noted that aligning with the APC was viewed as the "safest and most desirable" option to ensure the state benefits from federal presence and support.

Mutfwang, who was elected on the PDP platform in 2023, becomes the latest high-profile opposition figure to join the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
