The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed deep concern over escalating violence in and around El Obeid in North Kordofan State, warning that Sudan’s security and humanitarian situation is deteriorating rapidly.
In a statement, Youssouf said the African Union is alarmed by the worsening conflict and called on all parties to immediately cease hostilities, exercise restraint and comply with international humanitarian law and commitments under the Jeddah Declaration.
He stressed the need to protect civilians and ensure safe and unhindered access for humanitarian agencies to reach affected communities.
The AU Commission Chair also called for accountability for violations and abuses committed against civilians and urged domestic and external actors to avoid actions that could further escalate the crisis.
Youssouf reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, and called for renewed efforts toward an inclusive political process capable of restoring peace, stability and constitutional order.
He urged all stakeholders to intensify diplomatic engagement in support of a lasting resolution to the conflict.
