Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), confirming long‑standing rumors that he will cross over to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Diri announced this on Wednesday at the Executive Council chamber of the Bayelsa State Government House.

Alongside him, all 19 members of the State House of Assembly from the PDP, including the Speaker, Abraham Ingobere, and members of the State Executive Council, also resigned membership of the party.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Daniel Alabrah, also confirmed the development in a post on his social media handles.

What We Know So Far

  • The resignations come a day after the governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, defected to the APC

  • As of now, Diri has not publicly confirmed the party he plans to join

  • In June, many Bayelsa PDP lawmakers had already expressed support for Diri’s defection
