A Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square has sentenced Andrew Nice Ominikoron, a former Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, to death by hanging for the murder of 22-year-old, Bamise Ayanwola.

The verdict was delivered on Friday by Justice Sherifat Sonaike, who found Ominikoron guilty of multiple charges, including murder and rape.

Ominikoron was accused of conspiring with others still at large to assault and kill Bamise in February 2022. The young woman had boarded a BRT bus driven by Ominikoron but tragically never reached her destination. Days later, her lifeless and naked body was discovered by the roadside, sparking public outrage and widespread calls for justice.

Following an intensive investigation, Ominikoron was arrested and arraigned on charges of murder, rape, and conspiracy. Though he pleaded not guilty, the court found compelling evidence linking him to the crime.

Justice Sonaike ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt and subsequently sentenced Ominikoron to death by hanging.
