President Bola Tinubu is presiding over the Council of State meeting in Abuja today.

The meeting started just before 2 p.m., and President Tinubu was expected to officially submit his nominees for the position of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The presentation comes as Mahmood Yakubu's tenure as INEC chairman expires, heightening interest in who will oversee Nigeria’s electoral processes.

The Council of State’s review is a constitutional step before the Senate confirmation can proceed.

The candidate list has not yet been made public, but observers expect the process to advance swiftly.

The Council of State advises the president on key national issues, including electoral appointments, national honours, population census, and state pardons.

It is made up of the president, the vice president, former presidents, former heads of state, former Chief Justices of Nigeria, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, all state governors, and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
