A Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday granted bail of 200 million naira each to former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, his wife Asabe Bashir, and their son Abdulaziz Malami in an alleged money laundering case.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted the bail on Friday with strict conditions after the defendants filed an application following their re-arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The EFCC had earlier filed a 16-count charge against the three defendants bordering on alleged money laundering. They pleaded not guilty when they appeared in court on Feb. 27.

As part of the bail conditions, the judge ordered each defendant to provide two sureties in the sum of 200 million naira. One of the sureties for each defendant must deposit title documents of properties located in Abuja’s upscale Maitama or Asokoro districts.

The court also ordered the defendants to surrender their international passports to the court registry.

Justice Abdulmalik ruled that they would remain in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service until the bail conditions are fully met.

The case was adjourned until March 16 for the commencement of trial.
