The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may be heading for "political extinction" ahead of the 2027 general election.
This follows a series of high-profile defections and an unresolved leadership crisis at its core.
Speaking on Nigeria Info’s “The Newsroom”, public affairs analyst Nick Agule warned that the party’s internal dysfunction has reached a breaking point.
“The PDP is in a coma, waiting to die," he said.
“I think that this is dangerous for democracy.”
Agule argued that the defections currently rocking the PDP are a direct result of this power struggle.
“Those leaving the PDP have seen the game being played,” he explained.
“They know that if they remain, they might not even be nominated to contest in 2027.”
He further alleged that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, despite now serving in an APC government, still wields enormous influence over the PDP through the party's national secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.
“Wike has the PDP in a chokehold,” Agule alleged. “For as long as the secretary remains in his camp, the party cannot move forward.”
The analyst described the development as dangerous for Nigeria’s democracy, calling on lawmakers to amend sections of the law governing political parties.
“It shouldn’t be possible to kill a whole political party just because the chairman and secretary are fighting,” he said.
“The National Assembly must act.”
The opposition party, once dominant across Nigeria, now controls just a few states after losing several governors this year.
