The Nigerian federal government has declared Tuesday, August 25, a public holiday in observance of Eid ul-Mawlid, commemorating the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.

The official declaration was made on behalf of the government by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement signed by the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

Extending warm felicitations to Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora, Tunji-Ojo emphasized the deep spiritual and national significance of the observance, noting that the life of the Holy Prophet serves as an enduring model of selflessness and moral discipline.

Beyond its religious importance, Eid ul-Mawlid offers a sacred period for reflection on unity, peaceful coexistence, and moral renewal across all communities.

"Every Eid ul-Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility, and service to others," Tunji-Ojo stated.

"These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them."

The minister further called on citizens to observe the occasion with restraint and mutual respect while offering collective prayers for peace, security, and national cohesion.
