The family of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, says he is being unlawfully detained by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

In a statement released Friday, the family said El Rufai was first taken into ICPC custody on February 18.

They claim a remand order obtained from a magistrate court the following day was defective and only allowed a 14 day detention period, which has now expired.

According to the family, El Rufai has not been formally charged before a competent court. They also say the ICPC has not obtained a fresh or extended legal order to continue holding him.

The statement was signed by his son, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, who represents Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

The family insists there is currently no valid legal instrument authorizing the former governor’s continued detention.
