The Federal Government has commended the swift arrest of three suspected vandals caught damaging infrastructure on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, following the deployment of a newly installed CCTV surveillance system on the bridge.
The suspects were apprehended in real time while attempting to remove and steal 156 cat-eye reflective lights, also known as solar road studs, installed on the bridge to improve night-time visibility and road safety.
The arrest was carried out by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force after the CCTV system flagged the activity.
Speaking during the parade of the suspects, the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, praised the police for their prompt response, describing the incident as proof of the effectiveness of the Federal Government’s enhanced security measures on critical infrastructure.
“The President is working tirelessly to repair and upgrade our roads and bridges, yet some people are bent on destroying them,” Umahi said. “This kind of attitude is unacceptable, and it must stop.”
The suspects, who claimed to be scavengers popularly known as “Bola,” failed to give satisfactory explanations for their actions when questioned by journalists.

Umahi expressed concern over what he described as growing indifference and destructive behaviour toward public assets, urging Nigerians to take collective ownership of government infrastructure and report suspicious activities.
