The Federal Government has begun direct financial payments to students and technical vocational training centres under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Initiative.

The first tranche, announced on Thursday, provided monthly stipends of N22,500 to more than 42,000 students across Nigeria, covering their upkeep and transportation. Over 600 independent training centres also received funds to support instructional and skills training, ensuring the continuity and quality of the programs.

Education Minister Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa said the disbursement reflects President Bola Tinubu’s directive to invest in youth development. “Equipping our youth with in-demand, practical skills is the fastest way to drive job creation, entrepreneurship, and national economic growth,” he said, noting that the initiative is central to the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The payments mark the beginning of a sustained rollout, with additional tranches expected to follow, supporting students as they continue intensive vocational courses that began in May.
