The Federal Government has suspended the issuance of petrol import licences for a second consecutive month as local refining capacity increasingly meets domestic demand.

Officials say the move is part of efforts to enforce provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act, which allow petrol imports only when domestic refining capacity cannot meet national consumption.

The policy signals growing confidence in Nigeria’s refining output as authorities move to prioritise locally refined petroleum products.

It also reflects the government’s broader plan to reduce dependence on fuel imports and strengthen the country’s domestic energy sector.

Industry stakeholders say the decision could help support local refineries and encourage further investment in Nigeria’s refining capacity.
